What does the modern university look like?

 

Dedicated to humanity, seeking innovation in education and the way to modernize the offered master’s and doctoral programs, Medical University – Plovdiv has succeeded in realizing its dream, which will mark progress in scientific research and student achievements. The Medical Universities in Plovdiv, Sofia, and Pleven, the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, the Institute of Molecular Biology – BAS, Plovdiv University Paisii Hilendarski, the University of Food Technology, the National Sports Academy, and the University of Thrace – Stara Zagora joined forces to start a new era in higher education in Bulgaria.

The implementation of the OMNIA project, financed under the procedure „Modernization of higher schools“ of the Operational Program „Science and education for intelligent growth“ is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2023. The grant under OP NOIR and the European Social Fund is in the amount of BGN 4,762,516. With these funds, nine new multidisciplinary doctoral and master’s programs in „Medical microbiology and laboratory immunology for medical-diagnostic laboratories“, „Sports physiology, sports cardiology and sports traumatology“, „Dietetics“ will be developed and implemented (in Bulgarian and English). „, „Innovative Medicines“, „Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the Pharmaceutical Business“, „Biostatistics“, „Palliative Medicine“, „Geriatrics“, „Medicine, Psychology and Faith“. Within the framework of the project, about 100 masters and doctoral students will be trained, with the first students being admitted in the academic year 2022/2023 and those who successfully graduated will receive, for the first time in Bulgaria, a diploma issued by two or three universities.

Within the project activities, MU-Plovdiv will introduce innovative resource sharing practices and build a MEDTECH virtual university that will offer rich opportunities for both teachers and students. With the construction of MEDTECH, the existing online learning environment will be upgraded, which will enable teachers and students to use innovative educational infrastructure through the integration of cloud technologies, rooms for the creation of digital learning content, controlled electronic testing and conducting webinars. MU – Plovdiv will increase the capacity of the disk arrays for data archiving and will complete the construction of the Center for electronic and distance learning. Future pharmacists will have the opportunity to practice in the new „clean room“ virtual laboratory, and thus the Faculty of Pharmacy of the MU – Plovdiv will rank among the leading European universities that apply innovative tools for teaching and individual learning through artificial intelligence and virtual reality in newly created “Pharma Sim Centre. The career development of teachers and students will be encouraged through the planned trainings to increase digital skills and upgrade professional competences in foreign languages. In support of the professional development of students, doctoral students, postdoctoral fellows, specialists and young scientists, the good practices of the Erasmus+ and Marie Curie mobility programs for study, teaching, practice and research in the partner universities associated with the project will be continued. France, Italy and Greece. The creation of a network of the career centers of the partner universities will create conditions for a more productive connection between business and students, and the training in entrepreneurship and career development planned within the project will enable about 1 800 students from 9 Bulgarian scientific institutions to obtain valuable knowledge and skills for their future realization on the labor market, the implementation of their entrepreneurial ideas, the creation and development of their own business. In the name of the OMNIA project /lat. – „everything“/ the aspiration of MU-Plovdiv and its partners to encompass all aspects of modern life – from the training of medics to their realization. This is the key to the construction and future academic development of modern Bulgarian universities.

 

MAIN OBJECTIVE: Introduction and implementation of modernization and digital transformation methods in 9 new hybrid study programs created together with higher education institutions, project partners.

SUB-OBJECTIVES: Building systems to track student achievement; creation of inter-university career centers with the partner higher schools; stimulating the career development of teachers, students, doctoral students and young scientists.

TOTAL VALUE: BGN 4,762,516.11 national funding
